Malone Bay was extremely foggy and cold when we arrived, but the next day brought a bit of sunshine and extremely windy gusts all afternoon. (Later we discovered it had a gale warning and the Queen ferry even canceled.) After a thunderstorm at night and heavy, heavy rain, we were cuddled cozily in our sleeping bags thankful for our foresight to bust our asses to get here to avoid it all.

Malone Bay where mosquitoes wait outside your shelter like zombies waiting to nom nom your brains.

Today capped off a major achievement for us. It was the final day of our hardest section, hitting 100 miles hiked, and our capstone achievement of 100 nights in the backcountry. It’s hard to let that sink in when we are tired, but for all the worry and nerves about the things that could go wrong, the weather, and our middle-aged bodies, we’ve done it!

With the weather offering a cold and blustery wind, we left Siskiwit Bay at little disappointed. It clearly was a beautiful beach and had endless potential for fun and exploration, but not in 38 degree windy weather, so we packed up and pushed on to do a double mileage day.

My knees!!! My knees! The best quote that encapsulates week 2 of our Isle Royale adventure was found written in the shelter at Siskiwit Bay by some sage old soul. And I quote.... “Every day is a leg day on Isle Royale.” So true young hiker... so true...

Today, we had one goal in mind- give our bodies time to recover. Our swollen knees, aching feet, and tired muscles needed a day to reset and flush out the inflammation. The last stretch of the Minong was tough, but we had just gone at too fast a pace for my feet and I was bordering from sore to injury.

The long awaited day to end all days had finally arrived. Even now, I am writing about the hike 24 hours later, as all I wanted to do upon arrival to Windigo was shower, eat, and sleep. This chunk of the Minong is the final push into Windigo and there are no stopping points from Lake Desor to Windigo, leaving an enormous 12.6 miles after a week of hard hiking. The beginning of the hike follows a similar pattern to the day before, with rocky outcropping and up and downs that start you off in a disheartening fashion. Thinking of 12 miles of the same slog as the day before put me in a frustrated mindset. But even so, knowing we had so much distance to cover, we began at a quick pace, pushing the envelope of comfort with a shower and cold drink in Windigo on our minds.
